The Perfect End-of-Summer Thriller

Author Gillian Flynn's latest thriller Gone Girl generated quite a bit of well-deserved hype this summer, topping the New York Times Best Sellers list (it's been there for 11 weeks and counting) and flying fast off the shelves in both of our stores.

It's the kind of book everyone keeps talking about, and for good reason. Gillian Flynn is a recognizable name -- she previously published Dark Places, another New York Times bestseller -- but I'd read her earlier works, and they just hadn't grabbed me. I was wary Gone Girl would fall in the same category. Instead, I was hooked. I bought it on a Monday night and had it finished by Wednesday, and every single one of my friends has said the same thing: They finished it in a matter of days, even hours.

The story is full of twists and turns and powerful, convincing narration. It's dark and intense and suspenseful, to be sure, so know what you're getting yourself into. (I'll confess I didn't actually sleep too well the night I finished.) If you can look past that -- and if you're in the mood for a bit of a thriller anyway -- this is the book for you. Plus, beyond all that suspense is really just an outstanding, imaginative story.

Gone Girl is the perfect end-of-summer read; pack it in your beach bag this Labor Day weekend, and I'm confident you'll have it finished by your Monday evening cookout. Enjoy... and don't read it when you're home alone!
